Safe and Sound Protocol

The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP), developed by Dr. Stephen Porges, is an intervention designed to reduce stress and improve emotional control and behavioral organization through sending signals of safety through the auditory system. It is 5 hours of specially-filtered music to train the nervous system to feel safer in it's environment. This can be done in 5 consecutive days or sessions, or spread out over a longer period depending on the child's tolerance and response. This intervention can be incorporated into existing sessions with the horses or as a stand-alone treatment. For information about this intervention, contact us.

The "elevator pitch" from the SSP training:
"The intervention uses prosodic vocal music that has been filtered to train the middle ear muscles to focus in on the frequency envelope of human speech. Once human speech is properly perceived, the portal to social engagement has been opened. You’ll find you are (or your child is) better able to interpret not only the meaning, but also the intent in conversations. And the sense of safety that is achieved by better understanding the fluctuations in human voice calms your (or your child’s) physiological state. Once your system has been primed and your state is calm, further therapy is enhanced and behavioral regulation is improved."
